I am a guy of 29 years, dating a girl of 28 years for over 10years now and both of us are graduates, our problem started this year when I wanted to visit her family for introduction, I decided that we should re-check our genotype which I got to know that we both are As though we did it previously when we entered school and mine was As while she was AA, I don't know how come she is now As and I have checked severely hospital and the result is till the same. I don't know where to start again and she has being crying since then and begging me not to leave her, am confuse I don't know what to do and a friend also asked me to go on and marry her that we should be doing CVS test during pregnancy.

Good day. I must confess I feel your pain. I always advice that when relationships approach seriousness, it is wisdom to check all this medical parameters before comitting fully. Genotype is a big issue, I always advice folks do it at least twice in standard labs. why? haemoglobin electrophoresis is observer dependent and errors are common. so, doing it more than once is wisdom!. 10years is a lot! but can you stand the care of a sickler child? trust me, it drains everybody. love might evaporate at the face if this stern realities. though its all probability, both AS, 25% chance every child would be SS, 50% AS, 25% AA WELL, if you have all the money, what can be done while pregnant is to check the foetal genotype while in the womb ."chorionic villi sampling", if SS, we offer therapeutic abortion, until you are lucky enough to have AA or at least AS baby. lets say you have SS child sef, the genotype can be changed with bone marrow transplant, only UBTH does it in Nigeria and it costs 6M naira! Are you ready? Its a lesson to all, let's be guided to avoid avoidable heartbreaks and aches hmmnm!!
The issue is nigeria don't really have a standard check for dis genotype issue I have heard varius stories like dis (change in result) @ different test point. How are we even sure of the current one.

ReplyDeleteI havent concluded for them, but from my experience & practice, medical knowlege would say 'quit', 10yrs is alot, but is it in parallel with the financial, emotional agony they might go through if , if, if,if the 25% chance of if...... Well, like you said, God help them! #Dr.Dayo

ReplyDeleteI am not in support of therapeutic abortion, though am not a Dr. As a sickler, based on experience, quiting 10yrs relationship is better than life time agony. Please, if u dnt have money for bone marrow transplant, quit for the sake of that innocent child.
