The South Korean Constitutional Court at its plenary session yesterday February 25th struck down a 60-year-old law which forbids all act of adultery and punishes violators with two years imprisonment.
The presiding justice, Park Han-Chul while striking out the law said even though the act of adultery is bad, the country had no power in interfering in peoples private lives
“Even if adultery should be condemned as immoral, state power should not intervene in individuals’ private lives,” said presiding justice Park Han-Chul.
In the last six years, close to 5,500 people have been formerly arraigned on adultery charges including nearly 900 in 2014. In 2004, 216 people were jailed for adultery but the numbers dropped to 42 in 2008 and from 2008 till date, only 22 people had been sentenced to jail.

if stealing is not corruption in Nigeria and adultry is legalise in South korea i believe we re on the same boat.
ReplyDeleteadultry is not suppose to be a crime, its a choice just like smoking, drinking and fornication.
ReplyDeleteLooks to me like dat law was already almost ineffective cos it's not possible for people to stop committing adultery in this day and age, it's human nature... They only made it officially ineffective
ReplyDeleteis adultry a punishable offence in nigeria?of course the answer is NO.its a family matter and as the learned justice rightly observed;govt has no business in the citizenry's private live's.should a partner commit adultry then its up to the people who it directly concern.its a sin and not an offence.
ReplyDeleteMan has divorced God....hence what matters to God doesn't matter to men anymore....A sorry state!
ReplyDeleteThis is a good thing in a way. It's now that we will know the people who are truly faithful. Opportunity makes a thief. Many people don't steal because they haven't had the opportunity to steal and withstood it. It's the same situation in South Korea now. Many people in that country may not have been committing adultery because of the fear of imprisonment, not because adultery is bad. But now they have been given a go-ahead, let's see who is faithful and who isn't... for real!
